It may seem strange, but licorice is
actually an excellent ingredient in
the fight to decrease hyperpigmentation in skin. It is a
good natural alternative to harmful
chemical products such as
hydroquinone. The natural qualities
of licorice extract work to
reduce
dark spots on the face and other
parts of the body.
Your skin is actually the largest
organ on the body.
Hyperpigmentation occurs when the
skin produces too much melanin in
one area and a dark spot or dark
patch is formed. This is often
caused by years over exposure to the
sun, but may also be caused by acne,
uneven skin tone, or melasma. While
this is not generally life
threatening, it is a problem that
many people are frustrated by.
Some people may resort to surgical
procedures such as laser skin
resurfacing, but there are actually
natural products that work well to
decrease and often remove
hyperpigmentation.
Licorice was first tested by the
Japanese who found several skin care
components occurred naturally in the
plant. Galbridin, one of its
actives was found to be an effective
skin brightener and whitener,
galbrene was found to be a powerful
anti-oxidant. Another active,
licochalcone, was found to have
several benefits including
anti-acne, the ability to control
sebum, or oil, production, and the
ability to kill off bacteria. It
was also found to have sunscreen
properties that help protect the
skin from UVA and UVB rays.
The galbridin compound in licorice
is what gives it its strong
hyperpigmentation fading
properties. It actually works by
inhibiting the tyosinase activity of
melanocoytes, melanin and produces a
whitening of the skin. Galbridin is
a non-toxic agent and has little
risk of permanent discoloration.
Licorice is really a multifunctional
skin care ingredient. Skin
whitening is just one of its
beneficial properties. It has also
been shown to protect skin from
externals such as bacteria. While
it also helps to shields the skin
from the suns harmful rays thus
helping to keep skin looking younger
and hyperpigmentation from
reoccurring. It works great in
odds spots and sensitive spots such
as under skin lightening as well as
anal and vaginal skin lightening.
